The overpopulation of cats and dogs can be stopped and finally prevented by increasing the number of accessible, affordable and targeted high-quality high-volume spay and neuter (HQHVSN) clinics across the country. 

 

The management of the cats and dogs in the US has been revolutionized in the last 20 years, with the introduction of the No Kill movement. The animal welfare strategy evolved from 'pounds' to 'animal resource centers', which is an incredible life-saving achievement. Thanks to that movement, we are now ready for the next step; the No Birth Movement. We intentionally increase our focus on preventing the births of cats and dogs and tackle overpopulation head on. 

 

HQHVSN clinics are the key tool. There are 3 types:

• brick and mortar spay/neuter building

• spay/neuter mobile vans and

• Mobile Animal Sterilization Hospitals known as M.A.S.H clinics. 

M.A.S.H clinics can be set up in any location, they are easily replicable and scalable. M.A.S.H clinics are high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) clinics. Sterilization humanely reduces the cat and dog populations, while vaccinations prevent the spread of disease and reduce pain and suffering. M.A.S.H is an ever popular, ever growing, force within animal welfare.

 

This strategy will stop overpopulation at its source. The current programs that handle the overpopulation of cats and dogs would not need to exist, or be funded, to the degree that they are now. These programs become self-serving, if we are not prioritizing spay/neuter and contraceptives. 

 

Funding and prioritizing spay/neuter and contraceptives does work, as this is a solution-based strategy. It is a prevention program that we know works as the HQHVSN community has the data to prove it.

 

The No Birth Movement forces a refocus of strategies and financial priorities.
